LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES2
Nancy and Kirk Rodman
First Reader: Last Sunday we lit the first
candle—the candle of hope. Today we light the second candle, the candle
of peace. We light it knowing full well that peace is elusive, and in some
parts of the world, it is almost completely absent. Yet in this season of Advent,
we trust that God is never absent from us. God is always preparing something
new. And even where there is war and discord, whether between countries, within
families, or within our own hearts, God is present, gently leading us to new
possibilities.
Second Reader We take our encouragement from Christ, who
even in the midst of conflict found peace. God empowers each of us to be
peacemakers. With Christ leading the way, we too will work for peace. Let us
welcome Christ into our hearts and be guided by his ministry. Christ is coming.
Christ is always coming.
ADVENT
HYMN ÒO Come, O Come
EmmanuelÓ
O come, Desire of Nations bind,
All peoples in one heart and
mind.
Make envy, strife, and quarrels
cease;
fill the whole world with
heavenÕs peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O
Israel!
ADVENT
PRAYER
Loving God, in this time of preparation and
planning,
We thank you for the hope and peace
you unfailingly offer us.
Show us the creative power of hope.
Teach us the peace that comes from justice.
Prepare our hearts to be transformed by you,
That we may walk in the light of Christ.

*CHORAL RESPONSE ÓLet There Be Peace On EarthÓ
By Sy Miller and Jill
Jackson
Let there be peace on earth, and let it
begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our
Creator, children all are we.
Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now.
With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow:
To take each moment and
live each moment in peace eternally!
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
